Shopify plan pricing (updated for 2026)
Shopify sells three main plans for growing stores. All three include unlimited products, 24/7 support, and Shopify Payments where the country supports it. The difference is the monthly fee, the card rate, and the third-party transaction fee that kicks in if you bypass Shopify Payments.
| Plan | Monthly | Online card rate | Third-party fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | 2.9% + $0.30 | 2.0% |
| Shopify | $105 | 2.7% + $0.30 | 1.0% |
| Advanced | $399 | 2.5% + $0.30 | 0.5% |
Rates shown are for US domestic online orders using Shopify Payments. International cards, American Express, and manually keyed transactions carry a ~1% surcharge. In-person / POS rates are lower (2.6% / 2.5% / 2.4% respectively). Plus and Starter plans exist on either end of this scale but most independent sellers live inside Basic, Shopify, or Advanced.
The three fee types every Shopify seller pays
1. Card processing fee. Every credit-card payment costs a percentage of the sale plus a flat per-transaction charge (usually $0.30). This is what the card networks and Shopify Payments split. It's charged on the full amount the customer pays — including shipping and sales tax — not just the product price. A $50 order with $10 shipping is billed 2.9% × $60 = $1.74, plus $0.30, for a $2.04 card fee on Basic.
2. Shopify third-party transaction fee. If you use anything other than Shopify Payments — PayPal standalone, Stripe direct, Authorize.net, Klarna as a separate gateway — Shopify adds an extra 2% (Basic), 1% (Shopify), or 0.5% (Advanced) on top of whatever that gateway already charges. For a Basic-plan store selling through Stripe direct that's a combined 2.9% + 2.0% = 4.9% before the flat 30¢. This fee disappears entirely when you switch to Shopify Payments.
3. Amortized plan cost. The monthly plan fee only feels cheap when volume is high. Basic at $39/month is $0.39 per order at 100 orders/month — but only $0.008 per order at 5,000. The store above that ships 2 orders a week is really paying $4.88 per order just in plan overhead. Adding app subscriptions (reviews, email, subscriptions, upsell, inventory) can easily double that number.
What most sellers get wrong
The most common pricing mistake on Shopify is forgetting that shipping revenue gets card-feed too. A "free shipping" offer that bakes $8 into the price is cheaper for you than charging $8 at checkout because you don't pay 2.9% on that $8 twice. The second mistake is skipping Shopify Payments to keep an existing Stripe account — on Basic that decision costs 2% of every sale forever. The third is under-counting apps: three "essential" $19/month apps is another $57/month spread across whatever orders you ship, quietly eating margin on low-priced items.
Use the calculator above to plug in your real numbers before you pick a plan, switch a gateway, or price a new product. The break-even between Basic and Shopify plans typically lands around $2,750/month in card volume; between Shopify and Advanced around $147,000/month. Your break-even is a function of the third-party fee, not just the monthly cost.
