Amazon's ranking system (A9/A10) combines relevance (does your listing match the query?) with performance (do customers click and buy?). Indexed keywords come from your title, bullets, description, A+ content, and the hidden backend search terms field. If a word isn't in any of those fields, your listing won't appear for that query — period.

Titles are capped at 200 characters but Amazon strongly recommends staying under 80 for mobile. The structure that ranks is Brand + Core Keyword + Key Feature + Size/Quantity. Don't repeat keywords across the title and backend — each word only needs to be indexed once, and repetition wastes ranking weight.

Backend search terms are a 250-byte field (note: bytes, not characters — emoji and accents cost more). This is where you put synonyms, alternate spellings, misspellings buyers commonly make, and competitor brand names you can legally target. Do not repeat words from your title.

Conversion rate then dominates ranking. A high-volume keyword you rank #15 for but convert 8% on will outrank a competitor at #3 converting 2%. Main image, price, review count, and bullet point clarity drive that conversion — which is why a listing audit usually moves the needle faster than another round of keyword research.
