What we check

The signals Google and AI Search actually rank

Titles & meta descriptions

Front-loaded keywords, character length inside Google's snippet window, and hooks that earn the click over big-box competitors.

Alt text & image SEO

Missing alts, keyword-stuffed alts, oversized images — every issue that leaks image-search traffic and hurts Core Web Vitals.

Tags, collections & internal links

Tag hygiene, collection depth, and internal linking patterns that build topical authority across the catalog instead of stranding pages.

AI Search & structured data

Product / Offer JSON-LD, FAQ markup, and the copy signals ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews actually pull from.

Context

Why Shopify SEO breaks silently — and what to fix first

Shopify's out-of-the-box SEO is good enough to launch, and just bad enough that most stores never realize what it's costing them. The platform auto-generates title tags from the product name, pulls the first line of the description as the meta description, and leaves image alt text blank unless you type it in manually. Ninety percent of stores ship with default titles, blank alts, and duplicate meta copy across their entire catalog. Google sees that as low-effort content and buries the pages behind big-box competitors — even when the product itself is better.

The title tag is still the single biggest ranking signal a Shopify store controls. Google shows roughly 55-60 characters in a mobile snippet before truncating. If your title is "Blue Ceramic Mug – Yourstore" you're spending 15 characters on brand and leaving 40 for the query. Front-load the product noun and the intent modifier ("Handmade Blue Ceramic Coffee Mug — 12oz") and rankings shift within a crawl or two. This checker flags every product whose title is too short, too long, brand-first, or a duplicate of another product.

Meta descriptions don't rank pages, but they decide who clicks. Shopify's default — the first 155 characters of your description — almost always starts mid-sentence with a spec instead of a benefit. Rewriting meta to lead with the buyer outcome ("Hand-thrown mug that keeps coffee hot 40% longer") routinely lifts CTR from Google by 20-40%, which compounds because CTR is itself a ranking signal.

Alt text is where Shopify leaks the most free traffic. Google Image Search still drives 15-25% of ecommerce discovery in visual niches (fashion, home, gifts) and every blank alt is a page Google can't match to an image query. Worse, alt text is now the primary signal AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) use to decide which product to name when a shopper asks "best minimalist coffee mug under $30." A missing alt isn't a missed image ranking — it's a missed AI recommendation.

Tags and collections control internal linking, which is how Shopify tells Google how deep your catalog is. Every tag becomes a collection page, and each collection page links back to its products. A store with 200 products and 6 tags has almost no internal linking. The same store with a tight taxonomy of 40-60 tags (grouped by material, use-case, gift occasion, and price band) can rank collection pages for high-intent long-tail queries that individual product pages will never touch. But tag sprawl is worse than no tags at all — 400 one-off tags dilute link equity across dead-end pages.

Finally, structured data (Product, Offer, and Review JSON-LD) is what earns rich results — star ratings, price, availability — right inside the search snippet. Shopify emits basic Product schema on most themes, but review and aggregate rating markup requires an app or a theme edit. This checker flags every product missing schema and every product whose schema disagrees with what's on the page (price mismatches, stale availability), which is a common cause of Google's silent "your rich result was disqualified" penalty.

A full audit on a 100-SKU Shopify store typically surfaces 6-10 fixes that would take a specialist a week to find manually. The report ranks them by expected revenue impact so you know exactly where to start — usually the top three fixes recover 60-80% of the lost organic traffic.
