Why FBA looks profitable until you do the math

New Amazon sellers routinely list a $24.99 product, see a $4 wholesale cost, and assume $20 profit. The reality after FBA is closer to $11 — referral fee, FBA fulfillment fee, inbound shipping, and (often forgotten) storage fees pull a third to half of the sale price into Amazon's pocket. Add PPC and that profit halves again.

The 2024 FBA fulfillment fee for a Small Standard item under 16oz starts at $3.06 and climbs with weight. Large Standard (over 1lb) starts at $4.41 and adds $0.16 for every 4oz over 48oz. Oversize items are billed under a separate schedule entirely.

This calculator uses Amazon's published Standard-size rates. For Oversize, Apparel with size surcharges, or seasonal Q4 peak fees, layer those in manually. Aim for at least 25% net margin pre-PPC — anything under that and your ad budget eats the business.
